FAQ's
Below are some frequently asked questions about our circle. You can find answers to general SpiralScouts questions, such as scope, focus, philosophy, and background at www.spiralscouts.org.
How can I find out about hearth openings?
Email our outreach coordinator, who keeps track of hearth openings and can either put you on a waiting list or get you in touch with the right hearth.
What if I want to join, but there are no hearth openings?
We maintain a waiting list for those interested and will notify you when a place opens up or a new hearth is forming.
If I’m on a waiting list, how long do I have to wait?
This depends on how many others are on the waiting list and how many parent volunteers are willing to step forward and become hearth leaders. Occasionally, openings come up within established hearths, as well.
Can I visit a hearth meeting to check it out?
Of course! Please get in touch with our Outreach Coordinator to find an appropriate hearth to visit.
How many kids are usually in a hearth?
This depends on the hearth, usually between 6-12.
Can I start my own hearth?
Yes! All you need are two leaders — and, of course, interested kids — to begin your own hearth. See the checklist of steps to take when beginning your hearth.
How much does it cost to participate?
Annual membership fees per child are $14. Monthly dues to your hearth for activities and supplies are between $3-$10. Scouts also wear SpiralScouts T-shirts and neck cords and earn pins and badges, but the nominal costs for these items vary by hearth.
Do I have to be Pagan to join?
No! One of the great things about SpiralScouts is that everyone is welcome, no matter what belief system you follow or family structure you have. While many of our scout families follow a Pagan belief system, many others do not. You will likely feel very comfortable no matter what your belief.
How “religious” is SpiralScouts?
Compared to other mainstream religions and religion-based scouting organizations, SpiralScouts is not “religious.” SpiralScouts is based on the Earth-based Pagan belief system that honors the elements, seasons, nature, and spirit. This translates into a deep respect for our planet and all living things, and our rituals, ceremonies, and activities are focused on that. If you share a respect for nature and our Earth, you will probably feel right at home.
